NO OF PARTICIPANTS: 62

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Substance abuse is a complex and multifaceted issue with significant implications for public health. It can have adverse effects on physical health, mental well-being, and social relationships. Substance abuse disorders are recognized as medical conditions that may require intervention, counseling, and, in some cases, medical treatment to address the underlying issues and promote recovery

DETAILED DESCRIPTION: Substance abuse refers to the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs. It involves the repeated and excessive consumption of substances to the extent that it leads to negative physical, mental, social, or legal consequences for the individual. Substance abuse can manifest in various ways, such as excessive alcohol consumption, misuse of prescription medications, or the use of illegal drugs like cocaine, heroin, or methamphetamines

Key elements of substance abuse include:

  1. Harmful use : Consuming substances in a way that is detrimental to one's health or well-being, leading to physical or psychological harm
  2. Dependence : Developing a tolerance to the substance, requiring increasing amounts to achieve the desired effect, and experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not using it
  3. Impaired control: Difficulty in controlling or limiting substance intake, leading to compulsive and continued use despite knowing the associated risks and negative consequences.
  4. Social implications: Substance abuse often results in disruptions to social and occupational functioning, strained relationships, and legal issues
    • Preventing substance abuse is a critical endeavor that involves a comprehensive and collaborative approach. Education plays a pivotal role in raising awareness about the risks associated with substance abuse. The involvement of parents is instrumental in prevention efforts. Parenting programs that emphasize open communication, set clear expectations, and provide guidance on monitoring and supervising children contribute to creating a supportive family environment. Additionally, community engagement initiatives that focus on positive youth development, recreational activities, and constructive social interactions help build a sense of belonging and purpose, reducing the likelihood of engaging in substance abuse.
