Event Date: 27th - 29th April 2024

On April 29th, 2024, the Shakuntala Devi 1st National Moot Court Competition concluded with a flourish, marking the culmination of three days of intense legal deliberations and intellectual exchange. The event was graced by esteemed guests, including Justice Indira Banarjee, a former judge of the Supreme Court; Justice D.S. Dhaliwaal, a former Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge; and Justice J.R. Midha, a former Judge of the High Court Delhi.

The day, marked by intense legal deliberations and insightful presentations by participants, commenced with four teams qualifying for the semi-finals, setting the stage for a gripping finale. Throughout the event, there was a detailed examination of legal precedents and cases, focusing on issues such as the opening of history sheets for public safety and the right to privacy. The proceedings delved into significant legal principles, referencing cases like OM Kanan v VOI and Anwar Ali Saukar v State of West Bengal to establish the test of proportionality and the constitutional validity of legislative actions. Participants engaged in a thought-provoking discussion on the classification of individuals under the law and the implications of surveillance on personal freedoms. The session also addressed the concept of the right to be forgotten and its limitations, drawing from legal precedents such as Shreya Singhal v VOI. Speakers emphasized the importance of maintaining privacy and dignity as integral components of an individual's integrity.

At 2:30 PM, the guests arrived, escorted by NCC volunteers, to the auditorium, where the final rounds were underway. Amidst the competition, a thought-provoking discussion ensued when a judge highlighted the significance of police maintaining a diary before conducting background checks on suspects, emphasizing the need for establishing reasonable grounds. This led to a spirited exchange, with the judges elucidating the importance of background checks in preventing individuals with criminal backgrounds from assuming sensitive positions, such as in the military, which could pose a threat to national security. The judges' counterarguments regarding ambiguous legal terms drew parallels to the Preventive Detention Act, stimulating further debate. The session was extended by 1 minute to accommodate additional inquiries, including the question of the state's responsibility if a private individual is involved in an investigation, further extending by 1.5 minutes. Throughout the proceedings, Mrs. Priyam skillfully hosted the program, ensuring its smooth execution.

Following the riveting debates, bouquets were presented to the distinguished guests, including Suneel Galgotia, the Chancellor, who participated in lamp lighting ceremony. The Dean of the School of Law delivered an insightful speech, followed by thought-provoking addresses from the Chief Guests.

The event reached its climax with the distribution of awards and photographs taken with the winners in all categories, symbolizing the culmination of weeks of preparation and dedication.
