On November 21, 2024, the Legal Aid Clinic and Pro Bono Club of the School of Law, Galgotias University, launched an awareness drive and Nukkad Natak (street play) in Dankaur, a village where social issues like gender discrimination and sex selection continue to have a significant impact. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about these issues and educate the local community about the harmful consequences of sex selection and the importance of gender equality. The event began with a street march, which was led by a group of passionate student volunteers. The marchers carried colorful banners and chanted slogans like “Beta Beti Ek Samaan, Yahi Hai Sachha Insaan” (Sons and daughters are equal, this is true humanity), emphasizing the need for equal treatment for both sons and daughters. The march passed through the heart of Dankaur, with the enthusiastic volunteers interacting with passersby and residents along the way. The energy of the students was contagious, and the slogan chanting created a vibrant atmosphere, which captured the attention of local residents and drew them into the event.

As the march progressed through the streets, more and more people stopped to listen to the message. The atmosphere was one of excitement and engagement, as the local community members showed curiosity about the purpose of the event. The volunteers took the opportunity to educate the public on the dangers of sex selection, explaining how it perpetuates gender discrimination, and its adverse effects on society as a whole. The march was not only a visual spectacle but also an effective way of spreading the message of gender equality.

After the street march, the event shifted to a Nukkad Natak, a form of street theatre that uses drama to communicate social messages. The Nukkad Natak, performed by the student volunteers, was carefully designed to illustrate the various social, legal, and psychological consequences of sex selection. The play focused on the struggles faced by women and families who are affected by gender biases, showing how these practices lead to a lopsided gender ratio and negatively impact the overall well-being of society. The performance was both engaging and thought-provoking, as it depicted real-life scenarios of gender discrimination. The volunteers used their acting skills to present relatable situations where families, particularly women, face challenges due to cultural biases that prioritize sons over daughters. The drama conveyed how these harmful practices perpetuate a cycle of inequality, leading to a society where women are devalued and deprived of opportunities. The characters in the play portrayed the psychological effects of sex selection, such as feelings of guilt, shame, and emotional trauma, which resonated deeply with the audience.

The use of street theatre made the message even more powerful, as it allowed for direct interaction with the audience. The performers were able to connect with the community on a personal level, fostering an open dialogue about gender discrimination. The play was designed to engage people not just as spectators but as participants in the conversation, encouraging them to reflect on their own views and attitudes toward gender equality.

The local residents, who had gathered to watch the performance, were visibly moved by the play. Many clapped and cheered at the end, showing their support for the cause. Many shared personal stories about the gender biases they had witnessed in their own lives, further deepening the conversation about gender equality and the need for societal change. the event also sparked important discussions within the community. The success of the initiative demonstrated how street theatre and public events can be powerful tools for social change, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas like Dankaur. The initiative left a lasting impression on the community, encouraging them to challenge traditional gender norms and work toward a more equitable society for all.
