FDP on LATEX in association with “Spoken Tutorial on LaTeX by IIT Bombay”
Event Date: 14th - 24th May 2024
- Introduction
The Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) under the Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT) initiative aim to enhance the teaching and research capabilities of faculty members across India. One such FDP, organized by the Spoken Tutorial project of IIT Bombay, focused on LaTeX, a high-quality typesetting system widely used for technical and scientific documentation.
- Objectives
The primary objectives of this FDP were:
- To familiarize faculty members with LaTeX, a powerful document preparation system.
- To enhance the technical writing skills of the participants.
- To promote the use of open-source software in academia.
- Program Structur
3.1. Duration and Mode
The FDP was conducted over a period of 10 DAYS, with sessions held online to accommodate participants from various locations. Each day consisted of lectures, hands-on practice sessions, and Q&A discussions.
3.2. Curriculum
The curriculum covered a comprehensive range of topics related to LaTeX, including:
- Introduction to LaTeX and its installation.
- Document structure and formatting.
- Creating tables, lists, and figures.
- Writing mathematical equations and symbols.
- Managing references and citations.
- Using packages and templates.
- Creating presentations with Beamer.
- Participant Engagement
4.1. Registrations and Attendance
The FDP saw registration from over 53 faculty members SCSE & SCAT. The attendance was consistently high throughout the program, with active participation in live sessions and discussion forums.
4.2. Feedback and Interaction
Participants appreciated the well-structured curriculum and the clarity of instruction. The interactive sessions allowed for real-time problem-solving and sharing of best practices. Feedback was collected through online surveys, indicating a high level of satisfaction with the program's content and delivery.
- Outcomes and Impact
5.1. Skill Enhancement
The FDP successfully enhanced the LaTeX skills of participating faculty members, enabling them to produce high-quality academic documents. Many participants reported increased confidence in using LaTeX for their research and teaching activities.
5.2. Academic Contribution
By equipping faculty members with LaTeX proficiency, the FDP contributed to improving the quality of academic publications and presentations. This, in turn, supports the broader goal of enhancing the research output of educational institutions.
5.3. Promotion of Open-source Software
The program emphasized the advantages of using open-source software like LaTeX, fostering a culture of resource-sharing and collaboration within the academic community.
- Conclusion
The FDP on LaTeX, conducted by the Spoken Tutorial project of IIT Bombay under the PMMMNMTT initiative, was a significant step towards empowering faculty members with essential technical skills. The success of this program underscores the importance of continuous professional development and the role of technology in enhancing educational practices. Future FDPs can build on this success by introducing more advanced topics and expanding the reach to include more participants from diverse academic backgrounds.
