Data Verification: A Google News Initiative Training Network Workshop

The School of Media and Communication Studies organised a workshop on “Data Verification: A Google News Initiative Training Network Workshop” on September 13th, 2024 in A-205. The Workshop was conducted by Prof. Umesh Arya, Former Dean and HOD, Faculty of media studies in Guru Jambheshwar University of Science & Technology, Hisar. 

The Workshop was started by the, gripping question by Mr. Arya, that what do we need to be successful in our lives and one of the main factor that contributes to this is the studies, the academic works. One of the key points that he highlighted was the importance of asking right questions which is very significant aspect for the data journalism.

Mr. Umesh Arya accentuated on the fact that an average Indian spends almost 6.5 hours on social media and there is a huge necessity of how to make the sense of the data that has been presented and for that he explained the very foundation of the data pipeline, and the importance of the ‘define’ that is how one can start the research process. He additionally explained about the data, information, knowledge, Insights and Wisdom.

He emphasized on establishing that broken link between the studies and the subconscious again, which in today’s times is complex, however if one establish the link with studies and subconscious and open their mind, they will be in their resourceful state.

One of the key points that he highlighted was the importance of asking right questions which is very significant aspect for the data journalism. When the right question is being askedthe scenario changes with it and it makes everything clear and simple. He said, “Best of the things are always easy, not complex” and in case of data, when it is presented in simplest form, it will get the reach one has always wanted.

He also educated about some basics about the various tools that would help in the data journalism like Google Trends, Snippets, and Linkclump, an extension for the chrome and motivated students to work upon their way to the Google, whose mission statement is, to organisethe whole world’s information and make accessible to everyone and useful and through this initiative learning about the data verifications tools is the first step towards making a change worldwide.

The Workshop was concluded witha special tool, Google Pinpoint, a research tool for the journalists, that uses OCR and speech-to-text technology to enable one to search for text in text-based files in different formats.The motivating words of Prof. Umesh Arya motivated the budding journalists of the school to explore several topics, websites, tools initiated by Google and research effortlessly but effectively.
