Event Detailed Description
The Consumer Rights Day Awareness Campaign & Workshop was organized to help people in Bhata Village and Dhankaur, Uttar Pradesh, understand their consumer rights and how to protect themselves from fraud. The event was conducted by the Legal Awareness Cell, Legal Aid Clinic, and Pro Bono Club of the School of Law, Galgotias University. The campaign included three main activities: a consumer survey, an interactive workshop, and a visit to Dhankaur Police Station .
The event started with a survey, where our team spoke to the villagers to understand the common problems they faced as consumers. Many people shared their experiences of being overcharged for goods and services, receiving low-quality or defective products, and falling victim to online fraud. Some villagers also expressed that they were unaware of how to file complaints when they faced such problems. Our team collected this information to ensure that the awareness session focused on the most relevant issues.
Following the survey, we conducted an interactive workshop to educate the villagers about their consumer rights. We explained the five basic consumer rights:
Right to Safety: Protection from dangerous goods and services.
Right to Information: Consumers should get correct details about products and services.
Right to Choice: Consumers have the freedom to choose the best product available.
Right to Redressal: Consumers can seek help if they are cheated.
Right to Education: Awareness about consumer rights and responsibilities.
We also discussed how to file complaints if they face fraud or unfair trade practices. We introduced them to consumer forums, helplines, and online grievance redressal platforms where they can report their issues. Since online fraud was a major concern, a special session was conducted on how to identify and avoid scams. We explained how fake websites, misleading advertisements, and fraudulent phone calls trick people into giving their money or personal details. To make the session engaging and easy to understand, we used real-life examples, case studies, and live demonstrations.
After the workshop, all participating students visited Dhankaur Police Station, where they discussed the consumer issues reported by the villagers. The police officials acknowledged the concerns and explained how they handle fraud cases related to consumers. They also shared preventive measures and legal remedies available for victims of cyber fraud. The police officers advised Legal Aid members on how they can assist consumers in filing complaints and seeking justice. This visit helped build a stronger connection between law enforcement and legal aid services.
