Certificate Course on Non-Contentious Film and TV Practices in india

The School of Law, Galgotias University, in collaboration with Bal Uday, conducted a Certificate Course on Non-Contentious Film and TV Practice in India from September 10 to 14, 2024, in the Moot Court Hall (Room No. 501). Under the patronage of Ms. Aradhana Galgotias, and with the guidance of Convenors Prof. (Dr.) Smitha Nizar and Dr. Moumita Sen, Co-Convenor Ms. Gayatri Mishra (Bal Uday), and Faculty Coordinator Dr. Manasi Sinha, along with support from Prof. Kumar Kunal and Prof. Ajay Singh, the five-day certificate course was a resounding success. Mr. Abhinav Kumar, Senior Paralegal at Clintons, London, United Kingdom, was the keynote speaker. With 35 students participating, the course explored a wide range of legal aspects concerning the creation, production, distribution, and commercialization of films and TV shows, with a strong focus on practical insights and industry practices.

The School of Law at Galgotias University, in collaboration with Bal Uday, successfully conducted a five-day certificate course on Non-Contentious Film and TV Practice in India. The program featured lectures from distinguished guest speaker Mr. Abhinav Kumar, a Senior Paralegal at Clintons, London, who brought his expertise from the international legal landscape, particularly in the entertainment industry.

Day-wise Highlights:

Day 1: Introduction to Non-Contentious Film and TV Practice

The session opened with a comprehensive introduction to the non-contentious aspects of film and TV law. Mr. Kumar outlined the different stages of film production, emphasizing the legal intricacies involved in each stage. He provided insights into the concept of copyright subsisting in original work, underscoring the importance of originality in copyright law. A key takeaway was understanding copyright as a negative right, where copyright holders have the right to prevent others from using their work without permission.

Day 2: Copyright Protection and Ownership

Mr. Kumar delved deeper into the legal framework governing copyright protection. He discussed the duration of copyright protection, clarifying the different periods for various types of works. The lecture then moved into the nuances of ownership of copyright, including assignment and license, critical for creators and producers. A detailed explanation on modes of assignment followed, with a focus on preventing copyright infringement through proper legal channels.

Day 3: Content of Agreement in the Film Industry

This session provided practical insights into the content of agreements within the film industry. Mr. Kumar guided the students through various stages of agreements, from development to distribution, and explained how contracts protect the interests of all parties involved in film production, including producers, directors, actors, and crew members.

Day 4: Framing Techniques for Agreements

The lecture expanded on the previous day's discussion, offering a closer look at framing techniques for legal agreements. Mr. Kumar emphasized the importance of precise language and clear terms to avoid disputes in the entertainment industry. Real-life examples and case studies were used to illustrate the complexity of drafting agreements for film and TV production.

Day 5: Review and Assessment

The final day was dedicated to a brief review of the key topics discussed throughout the course. Mr. Kumar addressed students' queries, clarified doubts, and summarized the importance of understanding non-contentious legal frameworks in thecreative industry. The day concluded with an assessment test, in which 32 students successfully completed their certificate course.
